Ocean City Maryland Nor'easter Pounds Locals

Ocean City was battered by heavy rains and high winds Thursday night by a severe nor'easter that residents were calling "The Perfect Storm."

Neither predicted nor expected, the rain and tides caused moderate to heavy flooding.  The storm lingered over the resort town blocked by a high-pressure system to the north.

Ocean City's emergency response was further hampered by the closing of the Route 90 Bridge, one of two that connect the town to the mainland.

Gusts of up to 55 miles per hour were recorded, with winds stabilizing to 30 - 35 mph during the evening.  More than 2 inches of rain had fallen, and another 2 to 5 inches were expected today.

Even the "Weather Channel" showed up for some national coverage.

The storm hit when the population -- which can be 275,000 at times in the summer -- was only about 10,000.

This was not the worst storm Ocean City has ever seen, but it is a memorable one.  For the small town it is something the city is used to; nor'easters are a fact of life . . .
